Prodeo Academy Reading Buddies: Building Confidence and Skill, One Book at a Time

As the fourth graders lined up outside the Kindergarten classroom, books in hand, a mix of nervous energy and excitement filled the air. Among them stood Oo Meh, fidgeting with her book and glancing at the door. She took a deep breath, reminding herself she was there not just to read, but to connect and share her love of stories. The thought calmed her, and confidence began to grow.

When the teacher welcomed them in, Oo Meh stepped forward, ready to begin her journey as a Reading Buddy with a story to share.

At Prodeo Academy, reading is more than a skill. It’s a launching pad to understanding and lifelong learning. That belief fuels Reading Buddies, a literacy and leadership program where fourth-grade students visit Kindergarten classrooms to read and mentor. Led by reading intervention teacher Amy Riesdorf (Ms. R), the buddies explore books, sound out words, and share the joy of storytelling. But the program’s impact goes beyond literacy.

"Reading should be a moment of joy," Ms. R says. "When we inspire kids to love reading, we empower them to choose books from excitement, not obligation."

Reading Buddies build skills and give fourth graders like Oo Meh the chance to grow as leaders. Each week, they step into that role alongside their younger peers.

Oo Meh’s confidence blossomed in that first session. Her voice grew stronger, she asked questions, encouraged her buddy, and made the story relatable. By the end, she’d gone from shy to self-assured.

Her favorite part? “Helping the younger kids' brains grow and seeing them be better communicators.”

Programs like Reading Buddies reflect Prodeo’s work to build a supportive school community where students learn, lead, and grow together.
